Osgood Schlatter's Disease

Osgood Schlatter's Disease is named by two doctors Dr. Robert Osgood and Dr. Carl Schlatter in 1903. Basically, this disease is not a serious illness but just an overuse injury of the knee.

People affected by this disease are mainly adolescents in their growing phase or people who are young and active. There are two main types of adolescents who are afflicted with this disease.

Firstly there are teenagers who are experiencing a growth spurt. As a result, their tibial tubercle (the bony attachment below their their knee) is not fully developed. As a result, when stress is exerted on their patella tendon (the tendon below the kneecap), the tibial tubercle will break away from the tibia (shinbone). This causes pain and inflammation.

The second group of teenagers involve those who exert too much stress on their quadriceps. Thus, the quadriceps will end up pulling on the patella (kneecap). The patella will then transfer the force to the patella tendon. Since the patella tendon is attached to the tibial tubercle, the tibial tubercle may break off from the tibia as mentioned above.

I have lived with osgood schlatter's disease for a few months and I have realized that this disease can be curbed using painkillers and regular strengthening of my quadriceps. To learn how I lived through it, please visit my webpage at Osgood Schlatter's Disease. _
